According to the Mining Surveyors' Reports (Kilmore Division) of September 1866: "A rush of miners and claims rose between Tallarook and Seymour". This was described as being "near the junction of Sugarloaf and Sunday Creeks, about one mile on Kilmore side of Sunday Creek bridge".

The Kilmore Free Press on Thursday 10 May 1888 reported that they noted "with much pleasure"  that "Mr Thomas Griffiths [was] applying for a lease of land at the Sugar Loaf, between Kilmore and Broadford, for silver mining purposes
